Churches and maps After some confusion and misunderstanding,
the Ordnance Survey has issued a press release confirming that it
is to remove churches and chapels from maps if the building is no longer
used for worship - unless the building is needed for navigational purposes
(for example, has a spire). The press release points out that this has
been their policy for some time. Update 17 May - click on More

A CD ROM of images. A CD ROM of images of 'Sepulchral Effigies in Leicestershire and Rutland' is now available. It contains 500 images of 177 effigies in 85 churches. £13.50 from the Heart of England Press, 2 Cross Hill Close, Wymeswold, Loughborough, LE12 6UJ. With the advent of digital cameras and cheap low-volume production of CDs, this must surely be the way forward for large collections of images to be made widely available. Over time, this has the potential to transform the study of churches. See for example, the Digital Atlas of England Project. Entry created March 2003.
