Janet Gough has been appointed the new Director of Cathedrals and Church Buildings, responsible for national policy on the Church of England's 16,000 places of worship and for developing and maintaining relations between Church and State, and with national and local bodies on church building matters.
11 May 2008	Cadw have announced maintenance grants for places of worship in Wales. English Heritage application pack for repair grants for places of worship in England is available - Grade I and II listed buildings must apply by 30 June, Grade II by 30 Sep.

11 Sep 2007	The National Churches Trust is the new public name and face for what was previously the Historic Churches Preservation Trust (and ICBS). The new name represents a significant expansion of its ambition. Read more here.
11 Sep 2007	English Heritage are now providing a database of all churches which they or the Heritage Lottery Fund have given grants for repairs. Only one year of information is provided. It is hard to see what casual use can be made of this data, but it does provide a degree of public pressure for the churches to be open as specified in their grant conditions.

9 Aug 2007	Medieval mass. The Gild of Clerks will be keeping the Assumption of Our Lady with a high mass and procession according to the (medieval) Use of Sarum. The aim is to present a typical parochial mass of the 1490s - so it will be a chant mass with a very modest altar party. Saturday 18 August at 3pm, in the medieval church of St Peter Hungate in Norwich. (There will be a charge of £3.50, proceeds going towards the work of the Gild of Clerks and the Norwich Historic Churches Trust.) more . . .

2 June 2007	Cathedrals charging. The Bishop of London has mounted a vigorous defence in the Daily Telegraph of some cathedrals charging for admission.
2 June 2007	The church of St Peter, Barton-on-Humber, has now been re-opened  as a 'fully-fledged visitor attration', including an exhibition, Buried Lives . The church is well-known for being one of the first buildings with identifiable Saxon work. It was thoroughly excavated  in the early 1980s, and the bones are now to be restored to consecrated ground in a specially-built ossuary. 28 April 2007	The new journal, Material Religion, has won the runners-up prize for 'Best New Journal' 2006, awarded by the Council of  Editors of Learned Journals. The Journal covers the physical artefacts of all religions.

8 Mar 2007	The government has published its Heritage White Paper. This is intended to modernise  a fragmented system. It's too early to take a considered view, but it is notable that ecclesiastical exemption from listed building consent will continue. English Heritage have issued  principles of selection - that on places of worshp is a useful primer on the historic development of religiious buildings.
Feb 2007	St Colman's Cathedral, Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland, has been at the centre of heated discussion about a proposed reordering of the sanctuary. The case went to appeal, and it was recently announced that the planning application was refused. This link takes you to the site of the Friends of St Colman's, who include on their site a full transcript of the hearing. The Ecclesiological Society has no corporate view on this particular proposal, but we welcome the way in which the Friends website has opened up the subject for full debate.  Image copyright

Jan 2007	A report commissioned by the Government has shown how important the life of the church is to rural communities, and, by implication, the importance of the church building. Jan 2007	The Government has been encouraged to think about the future of church buildings in a well-informed and forward-looking debate in the House of Lords and a short adjournment debate in the House of Commons, and by a Select Committee report on heritage (see page 63 of the report), which was based on a range of interesting written and oral evidence. The Government's response was a disappointment. In the meantime, good news from the Heritage Lottery Fund, who have confirmed their long-term commitment to funding repair grants to listed places of worship. Added January 2007

Grant to investigate training of volunteers responsible for historic places of worship. Oh dear - we have been rather slow off the mark to spot this - but SPAB have been given a grant by the HLF to look at how the maintenance of churches and other places of worship is organised. Added 12 May 2005.

Richard Halsey has taken up a newly-created role in English Heritage, as Places of Worship Strategy, Implementation Manager. This means that for the first time English Heritage has someone devoted full-time to driving forward their strategy for churches and other places of worship. Added 2 February 2005.

The Annual Reports of the Historic Churches Preservation Trust and the Churches Conservation Trust both came out towards the end of 2004. Both contain interesting and important material looking to the future rather then merely being self-congratulatory about the past. Details of these organisations on our 'Organisations' page. A guidance note on the treatment of excavated human remains has just been published (25 January 2005) jointly by English Heritage and the Church of England. Snappily entitled Guidance for best practice for treatment of human remains excavated from Christian burial grounds in England, it will be of interest to those who are considering adding extensions to their churches, to archaeologists, and planners. You can download a copy from the Church of England website (or, I presume, the English Heritage website, though I couldn't find it there). Added 25 January 2005.

In late 2004 the Association of Diocesan and Cathedral Archaeologists published their Archaeological requirements for works on churches and churchyards. This can be downloaded from the Association's site. Added 25 January 2005.

The Autumn edition of the Conservation Bulletin, published by English Heritage, was devoted to places of worship, mostly churches. It is reported tht Tessa Jowell, the Secretary of State for Culture, has warned that the British Government is to slash the plethora of bodies safeguarding the national heritage to crack down on waste. In the firing line are such bodies as English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the Churches Conservation Trust, all of which are crucial to the support of historic churches in England and Wales. Bodley's last major commission was Holy Trinity, Prince Consort Road, London. The church is celebrating the Centenary of its Consecration on Tuesday, 28 October, at 6.30 pm, when the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Richard Chartres, will preside and preach at a Festal Eucharist, which will be followed by light refreshments.  The organisers have kindly offered an invitation to any Ecclsoc members who would like to atttend  - please let them know in advance, by emailing office.stjohnswood@london.anglican.org. English Heritage grant application forms now available - grants are available this year for Grade II as well as Grade I and II* churches. Click here, which takes you to the Conserving Historic Places page on the EH site, from which you click on 'A guide to grants' at top left, then on 'Repair grants to for Places of Worship in England'. Churches and maps After some confusion and misunderstanding, the Ordnance Survey has issued a  press release confirming that it is to remove churches and chapels from maps if the building is no longer used for worship - unless the building is needed for navigational purposes (for example, has a spire). The press release points out that this has been their policy for some time. Update 17 May - click on More .

National Aerials Agreement The Church of England National Aerials Agreement has a website with good information about using churches for mobile telecommunications installations, and the opportunity to register an interest for your church. Entry created 2 March 2003.

A CD ROM of images. A CD ROM of images of 'Sepulchral Effigies in Leicestershire and Rutland' is now available. It contains 500 images of 177 effigies in 85 churches. £13.50 from the Heart of England Press, 2 Cross Hill Close, Wymeswold, Loughborough, LE12 6UJ. With the advent of digital cameras and cheap low-volume production of CDs, this must surely be the way forward for large collections of images to be made widely available. St John's Church, Newbury is one of the finest by our late President, Stephen Dykes Bower, built after the earlier church was bombed during the war. During 8 -10 February 2003 there is a weekend of commemoration culminating in an act of remembrance of those who died in the attack. on 10 February 1943. You can get details from St John's website, and the information the site provides about Dykes Bower makes it our site of the month.

The Church of England recently ran a competition for church websites. There were six hundred entries. Here are the three winners
